We suggest an ontology-oriented approach towards integration of geographical information system with collections of digital publications. The approach rests on the idea of supplying each publication with generated «geographical» index to complement its «textual» index. The geographical index will be generated automatically from the ontology of the region place names applying the authors' technology for systematization and retrieval of digital publications. Through this approach users will be able to automatically access the digital documents semantically related to the areas they highlight in the map. Vice versa, they can be automatically redirected from the digital publications found after their inquiry to the map areas corresponding to the geographical objects relevant for the publications.
